A person whose one parent was a citizen of Ukraine at the time of their birth is a citizen of Ukraine from the moment of birth. In this case, Ukrainian citizenship is acquired automatically. At the same time, it is necessary to formalize the acquisition of Ukrainian citizenship by obtaining the relevant documents.

If a child was born abroad after 01 March 2001, it is mandatory to obtain a certificate of registration of the child as a citizen of Ukraine.

The certificate of registration of the child as a citizen of Ukraine is required for:
the first issuance of a passport for travel abroad;
the issuance of a Ukrainian ID card upon reaching the age of 14;
receiving state assistance at the birth of a child in Ukraine.
💵 No consular fee is charged for registering a child as a citizen of Ukraine.
The application is submitted by one of the child’s parents or by the child’s legal representative. If the person is already an adult, they must submit the documents for their registration as a citizen of Ukraine personally.
Processing time for the certificate: up to 30 calendar days. If no additional verification is required, the certificate may be issued on the same day as the application (provided that all required documents are submitted and the embassy has the technical capability).
When a legal representative submits an application regarding issues of Ukrainian citizenship, the presence of the child is mandatory from the age of 14. Consent to acquire Ukrainian citizenship or to renounce Ukrainian citizenship for a child aged 14 to 18 must be provided in the form of a written statement signed and submitted personally by the child.
ATTENTION. The certificate of registration of a person as a citizen of Ukraine is issued in a single copy and only once. The issuance of a duplicate certificate is not possible. In case of loss, damage, or seizure of this document, a certificate confirming the fact of the previously completed registration of the person as a citizen of Ukraine may be issued. A consular fee is charged for issuing such a certificate according to the approved tariffs: 30 USD.
ATTENTION. Registration of a child as a citizen of Ukraine is not carried out for children born after January 16, 2026, if both parents were citizens of Ukraine at the time of the child’s birth and are indicated in the child’s birth certificate as citizens of Ukraine.
